I have 29 years of experience in vibration analysis, serving in various roles, including data collector, data analyst, site lead, and area team lead. My work has spanned various industries, including pulp and paper, mining, power generation, and nearly everything in between. Now I teach ISO vibration certification classes. I’m often asked why certification matters. The answer is straightforward, though there are also a few overlooked reasons worth considering.
Why Certification Matters

Certification is proof that you can perform vibration analysis to an international standard and be trusted for your expertise. Maintenance personnel are more likely to value your recommendations when costly decisions are at stake. For new analysts, the first six months to a year can be especially tough. During this time, they must balance data collection setups with learning the people, processes, and equipment. Sometimes, even locating machines or deciphering what they’re called is a challenge. Having certification gives you an added layer of credibility during this learning curve, helping you gain respect and navigate those early hurdles more effectively.
Career Growth Opportunities

Holding an ISO certification often leads to career advancement, including promotions or raises, which is a clear benefit for the analyst. It also adds another “arrow in your quiver” should you decide to pursue other career opportunities.
Building Skills and Confidence
Understanding vibration analysis from different angles can be challenging, and for an analyst, managing all of this information can be stressful. Making very expensive decisions correctly requires a skill set that is primarily developed through mentorship and classroom training. This foundation not only helps you perform better but also eases the stress of the job. As your knowledge grows, so does your confidence, making the work more enjoyable and even fun. That’s why teaching has become such a natural extension of my career. Helping new analysts build confidence and reduce that stress is something I truly value.
The Reward of Teaching

I enjoy teaching for many reasons, but first and foremost, I enjoy working with people. Engaging with new analysts at all levels gives me the chance to hear their stories, understand their struggles, and share practical advice they can take back to their organizations. One of the most rewarding moments is seeing that “lightbulb” turn on—the look in their eyes when everything clicks and they realize, I get it! I’ve always loved the challenge of being an analyst, and if I can help others feel excited and confident about doing this critical work, then I know I’ve done my job.
